Who the Heck Am I?

by Richard Pulfer

Welcome to the Comic Book Journal, the new blog for panels, pages and everything between from 451 Press.Comicspace_Richard2.jpg

My name’s Richard Pulfer, and to fall back on a cliche, I’ll be your host.

I’ve decided the best course for introducing myself is a great big unadulterated rant about my picks and faves in the comic book community. So here goes nothing:

I’ve Been Reading Comics Since: At least the fourth grade, but those were just some Dino-Riders I picked up at the drug store. I didn’t get the good stuff until the 7 or 8th Grade when my uncles gave me some 400 comics, including Larry Hama’s G.I. Joe, some Power Man and Iron Fist, and a treasure trove of Frank Miller’s Daredevil.

Favorite Superhero: I love Starman, and I’ve never been able to say it in public, as usually people get mixed up with a cheesy John Carpenter movie of the same name.

Favorite Supervillain: I’m tempted to say the Shade of Starman, but he’s really not a supervillian. Still, I like the conflicted villains the best. Captain Cold of the Flash. Spider-Man’s Sandman (Thomas Haden Church of late). And especially 52’s Black Adam (whom I’ll be dealing with specifically tomorrow).

I’m Reading: Scott McCloud’s Reinventing Comics. I’ve read the first and third book, leaving me only this penultimate installment to ponder.

I’m Playing: X-Men Legends II. Yes, I’m way out of date with video games - I only just got Marvel Ultimate Alliance for Christmas, leading me to consequently play the entire series in reverse order.

I’m Fuming Over: How something exceptionally bad has happened to virtually every character I liked in 52, and how DC had the nerve to try and get me to sign up for a Countdown subscription when I’m still several weeks behind in the 52 subscription.

Well, that’s enough out of me. I’d love to hear your responses to those few questions as we kick off this ink blot on the blogosphere.

Glad to have you writing with us! This is one of my favorite topics, I’m a huge comic books fan. I got started with Spider-Man, X-Men etc. back in the hey day of John Byrne, Chris Clairmont, Frank Miller etc.

Looking forward to reading you’re stuff!

Dude, this is awesome. Finally a comic book blog. Good luck, if you need any help please let me know!!
    .
Most of the comics I read are back issues. I find the most pleasure from reading old comics, especially ones from the dump bins. I just picked up Alien Legion and I finished a whole crap load of issues of ROM the other day. I also read my roomies Transformers and Battlestar Galactica comics, mostly cuz they’re free for me to read hehe.
    .
BTW Have you ever been by Wizard Universe’s forums? I’d recommend joining up as you can make a lot of nifty connections. Let me know if you do!

  3. Richard Pulfer Says:

Ahhh, ROM the Spaceknight. Those were probably my guilty pleasure among all comics I got from my uncles. Fighting the Dire Wraiths alongside his girlfriend, a Space Knight with an odd-looking triangular TV for a head.

    Classic.

  4. Emma Says:

Welcome, Richard! This should be a great blog…

  5. Randi Says:

Okay, you opened up the door for questions so allow me to ask the one that torments both my husband and I and has been the source of more than one argument.

    Superman or Batman.

  6. Richard Pulfer Says:

Batman rocks in the (new) movies. There’s just no comparison between Christian Bale and Brandon Routh.

But unfortunately, this blog isn’t about movies, its about comics - and there goes my easy answer.

Unfortunately, they’re rank tied in the comics. For years, Batman was just plainly cooler than Superman, but after a while, well, he just became downright rude and people stopped carng.

Superman, meanwhile, was plainly mediocre until the Post-Post Crisis, when he started boosting great writing from the likes of Richard Donner, Geoff Johns and Kurt Busiek.

But Batman’s no slouch in the Post-Post Crisis writing department, with stints from writers like James Robinson (my Starman hero) and Grant Morrison.

So the long fanboy conclusion is: they’re tied, but not for long.

  7. Paul Says:

You know what I don’t like about Batman? This thing where he can do ANYTHING if he’s prepared. I mean, come on already.

  8. Keith Says:

awesome stuff, glad to have you here. Are you gonna focus any on webcomics? And what are your thoughts on the upcoming ‘World War Hulk’?

  9. Richard Pulfer Says:

    Keith,

I’m actually planning to write a Weekly Webcomic Recap every Friday, covering an ever-expanding list of webcomic happenings.

I’m still divided on World War Hulk. If the entire superhero community joined together to fight the Hulk, I think it would be a short fight - yeah, the Hulk is the toughest guy on the planet, but even he wouldn’t stand a chance against an all-out multi-front super-fest.

That said, I hope World War Hulk highlights the divisions still running rampant through the Marvel Universe post-Civil War. I could see a Romero-esque vision of the superheroes failing to put aside their differences in one big mean, green problem.

Still, if the entire series just consists of various supergroups fighting the Hulk AGAIN and AGAIN, its going to get old real quick.

  10. Paul Says:

I have to disagree. That’s a recipe for teh awesome Richard.

About Comic Book Journal

Where do capes and cowls end and horror and noir begin? What's more important: the four-color panels, or the letter balloons within them? Did comics really begin in cave walls, or just in the Sunday morning cartoons? What the heck is a graphic novel? These questions and more are answered in the Comic Book Journal, the place between the page and the panel, the motion line and the sound byte, the superhero and the every(wo)man.
